59 Budafoki Street (formerly tobacco factory)

The Royal Tobacco Factory of Budapest Lágymányos was designed by architect of Trade Ministry Lajos Zobel in 1908-1909.

Production technology determined how buildings were arranged on the unique-shaped plot. Overlooking Karinthy Street the headquarters building and a residential building was constructed on the corners. Because of an internal passage a triangular workshop was built behind Gate 1.

This building and the left side of the current building of Lechner Knowledge Center was pulled down when the headquarters of MOL was built.

The warehouse is a remarkable example for industrial reinforced concrete structures in Hungary. The rapid spread of reinforced concrete in architecture began around 1900 for stability and fire safety reasons. Reinforced concrete structures have the advantage of separating building structure from walls making the building flexibly adjustable. Original plans show initial functions as well from storage to production.

The building complex was finished in 1912. It is an interesting and impressive example of industrial architecture in the early 20th century combining functionality with delicate Historical and Secessionist decoration. The building has a listed status.
